How to Protect Oneself from Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), "coronavirus",  is a potentially deadly respiratory illness that has the ability to spread from person to person. The virus was first identified in 2019 during investigation efforts into the sudden occurrence of a then unidentified illness affecting Wuhan, China.

The risk of contracting the coronavirus is increased for healthcare workers including nurses and other medical professionals who may come into close contact with an infected person, as the diseases is said to spread person-to-person. For this reason, Erudite Nursing Institute is taking special precaution to add increased training measures for the students of the accelerated Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN), Registered Nursing (RN), Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), and Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) programs. These online nursing programs offered through Erudite Nursing Instituteare being updated to implement President Trump's "Coronavirus Guidelines for America".

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has suggested the following measures be taken to help protect oneself:

  • Avoid being exposed to this virus to the utmost extent possible. (The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.)
  • Wash hands often and for at least 20 seconds, using soap.
  • When hand washing unavailable, utilize hand sanitize with a minimum of 60% alcohol.
  • Both clean and disinfect commonly used areas and surfaces.
  • Use a face mask if ill to prevent spread of COVID-19 and other diseases.

Senior citizens among other older adults and people who have severe underlying chronic medical conditions are believed to be at higher risk for developing more serious complications from the COVID-19 illness. For this reason, Erudite Nursing Institute recommends consulting with an appropriate health care provider about additional steps one may be able to take to protect themselves.
