TSTC IN HOSTING ITS FIRST NURSING CAREER EXPO FOR BETTER CAREER GROWTH
Preparing student nurses for the future takes a lot of effort and in-depth understanding as to what insights and engaging events do they need in order for them to be equipped?
Texas State Technical College (TSTC) recently hosted its first Nursing Career Expo organized by the college’s Talent Management and Career Services held at the newly refurbished TSTC Nursing Center.
Some students from the TSTC’s Registered Nursing program as well as students from vocational nursing program, had the chance to visit 11 potential employers from several clinics and home health agencies, including Harlingen Medical Center, Valley Baptist Medical Center, and South Texas Health System.
“We’ve been meeting about and organizing this expo for about a year now,” said TSTC Statewide Nursing Division Director Jean Lashbrook in a report. “We hope that our students see that they’re in demand and that this motivates them to cross the finish line.”
In connection to the expo, participants received assistance from career services representatives in resume building and interview proficiency to equip them for on-site interviews.
Yvette Martinez, first cohort from TSTC’s Registered Nursing program who’ll graduate this July said in a statement:
“Events like this really give us (students) a leg up… I’ve personally had a chance to ask questions, gain exposure to opportunities available and get practice in interviewing. This is invaluable.”
On the other hand, Shirley Byrd, TSTC’s Registered Nursing program director said this expo was needed for the vocational and registered nursing students.
“While TSTC already hosts a large career expo earlier in the year, it’s difficult for our students who are at their clinical sites daily to make it back to campus,” said Byrd. “So it was time to help our students out with their own event.”
