Why Senior People Are More Prone To Coronavirus Infections

The cases of COVID-19 pandemic are doubling up in rocket speed. As new cases are getting emerged, researchers have learned that the senior people of our society and the ones having previous medical issues in the past are more and more prone to this virus. A recent statement by Nancy Messonnier, MD and Director of National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases for CDC, said in a recent press conference that the lives of older people, especially above 60, are at stake. She even continued that they are at a much higher risk than others for severe infection formation and death.

Why Are The Senior People More Vulnerable To The COVID-19 Virus?

The answer to this question has two different reasons, both social and physical. Senior people of our society have a comparatively weak immune system when compared to others. In most cases, researchers saw that they are more likely to have pre-existing issues such as lung disease, heart issues, kidney problems, or even cholesterol and diabetes, which in fact weakens their body’s ability to fight back the infection. In several countries, the older citizens stay in mostly institutionalized settings like retirement or nursing home, or living within a family in a more crowded situation, where there is always a considerable risk of being attacked by this infectious disease.

The seniors may also have several mobility or isolation challenges. Staying in isolation makes it difficult for them to get information from the outside world or even source food, especially if stores run out of stock. In many third world countries, senior peoples are seen to live in poverty, which makes it more difficult for them to take care of themselves. All these factors represent the complete range of challenges pertaining to their health conditions.

Why Is The Mortality Rate Higher In Older People?

Well, there is a direct correlation between age and mortality. If anyone is in the age bracket of 60 to 69, the rate of mortality is at 3.6%. At the age of 70 to 79, the rate is 8%, and for the ones above 80, the rate of mortality lies in between 15%. In some unforeseen cases, the mortality rate can grow much higher by 18%.

The senior people are also more likely to get affected by the severe acute respiratory syndrome, the lung disease that is causing more and more deaths worldwide. A case emerged from Wuhan, China, where a patient was seen dyeing from coronavirus without having any symptoms of pneumonia. The death was mainly due to the stress factor that the old body was living with.

While each and every country is facing the pandemic with courage, doctors, nurses, and the medical team still remains to be in the first line of defense. Current reports state that there is a massive shortage of trained nurses and medical staff in the US.

In order to fulfill the deficit, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and some other American government organizations came up with some brilliant ideas and plans. Their plan includes several instructions for the nursing schools and Institutes of Higher Education of America to fight against this dreaded disease. Erudite online nursing schools, being an elite institution, has come up with many online accelerated nursing programs to help the existing nurses in their fight against the COVID-19 disease.
